The UDHR recognises that unless human rights is protected by the rule of law, people will be โ€œcompelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression.โ€ We witness this in Palestine. This is also happening in Burma, West Papua, India, and the Philippines.

In the Philippines, belligerent forces represented by the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), and the current government, both announced intent to resume peace talks in late November. Brutal counterinsurgency efforts by the Philippine government, implemented with an โ€œanti-terrorโ€ pretense, have not quelled revolutionary movements struggling for national sovereignty from US power, and democratic rights primarily based on land redistribution to landless peasants.

This recent development foregrounds Philippine social movementsโ€™ demand for peace based on social justice. A key component of social justice is the realisation of the full range of peopleโ€™s economic, social, cultural, and civil-political rights, possible through political sovereignty and the democratic governance over resources and development. Working towards just peace also entails holding perpetrators of gross injustices and rights violations to account, from atrocities during Marcos Sr.โ€™s Martial Law, to Duterteโ€™s brutal drug war and counterinsurgency which are continued by the current administration of Marcos Jr.
